Accommodation and Food
John Melkrem Guesthouse is a simple local house with matresses and mosquito nets. Most trekkers will have a tent and there is also a campsite.

Shared toilet and shower (bucket) facilities are housed separately.

Services and Transport
Port Vato, stores and West Ambrym's health centre are about one kilometre to the west. Lalinda village is about one kilometre to the east.

Both Lalinda and Port Vato have trucks and a shared ride to or from Craig Cove is possible, if you're patient.

The photograph on this website is Joses old bungalow and not up to date. (Happy to send a current photo to the webmaster :))
The bungalow is large with a seating area and two bedrooms, one with a single bed and one a double). The facilities are separate (usual for Ambrym), bucket for shower and "squat" toilet. Joses and his family are lovely, very welcoming. Good English despite Francophone education.
Joses was my guide for the trek to the volcanoes and was supportive and helpful, especially when it was tough going.

We were 4 people on Ambrym from 8 to 12 of August, 2012. John Melkrem Guesthouse is operated by Joses Wilfred. The guesthouse is near to Joses 's house. It is a bungallow of two rooms (2 beds and 3 beds) separated by a "lounge". The very good "aelan kakae" meals are taken in a separate local building. "small house" toilet outside are clean. The shower is taken outside with a bucket. The prices are not those mentionned on this website. Joses asked us 2500 VT/person/night, which is much too expensive according to the standard of accommodation. But the welcome was warm, Joses is a very good organizer for tours. He was on time with a transport to get us at Craig Cove Airstrip. He provided us a very good and very helpfull guide (Georges), and two carriers. Our three days tour to the Marum volcano was amazing. Don't hesitate to contact Joses in advance to organize your tour. He's easily reachable by phone. You'd better talking about prices in advance.
