Solomon
Douglas Bungalows is a well known place to stay on north
Ambrym near Ranon village. It was originally located at
the end of the beach, where a cyclone destroyed it, and was
then rebuilt on the hill above the beach.
Ranon's
main attractions are hiking Mount Tovuo, kastom
performances and carving. Volcano treks are via Ranvetlam.
Both Freddie and Laan Douglas, the brothers who run Solomon
Douglas Bungalows, are skilled woodcarvers.
Costs
and Booking
Accommodation at Solomon Douglas costs 4000 or 4500 Vatu
per person, per night, including all meals. It has always
been expensive and discounts may be offered - just ask.

and Food
Solomon Douglas has two semi-modern bungalows with two bedrooms
in each. Three of the rooms have a double and a single bed
inside, one has a double bed only and there are a couple
of spare single beds. Mosquito nets are provided and the
bungalow doors have locks. Kerosene or electric lamps are
used for lighting.
Solomon
Douglas Bungalows has a shared shower and western toilet.
The local water supply doesn't quite reach Solomon Douglas
Bungalows. An elevated drum supplies the shower and a bucket
is used to flush the toilet. Bath towel, toilet paper and
soap are provided.
Solomon
Douglas serves meals with aelan
kaekae and fresh fish or chicken. The water supply is
OK to drink.
Services,
Suggestions and Transport
Ranon has a two or three stores, a medical clinic and a
few speedboats. Laan
Douglas has a speedboat and offers guests a reduced rate
of 6000 Vatu to or from Craig Cove (charter).
