Bay of Illusions Yacht Club is new place in Matantas. It's run by Purity and Solomon, who used to manage Vatthe Lodge before that shut down.
Matantas
is remote from Luganville. Keen naturalists make the effort
to visit Vatthe Conservation Area.
A group from the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society
of New Zealand visits every year in July/August. Cruising
Yachts favour the sheltered anchorage of Big Bay.

Accommodation and food
Bay of Illusions has two local-style thatched bungalows and a a dining hall/restaurant. Mosquito nets are provided. Kerosene lamps are used for lighting. There is a shared bucket-flush toilet and a shower. In the dry season, when water is scarce, you can bathe in the river.
Purity is a good cook. Breakfasts are simply bread, fruits and
tea or coffee. Lunches and dinners can include bus
kabis, manioc,
breadfruit,
rice, fried green paw-paw,
chicken and wild pig, or fish. Traditional aelan
kaekae, like nalot
breadfruit, can be made on request and it's interesting
to watch the preparation.
Services
and suggestions
There are a few basic stores in Matantas. There
are sometimes a lot of mosquitoes and you must
bring mosquito repellent.
