| Ikamir Guest House is a new place at Bethel village on west Tanna. It is community-owned and all profits go directly to supporting the education of the local children. It's a great way to have a holiday while contributing positively to the locals.
Right out the front of Ikamir guesthouse are great snorkelling opportunities and stunning sunsets. All tours can be arranged, including the Yasur volcano and Yakel custom village.
Tankyu tumas long Melanie for telling us about Bethel.
Costs and Booking
Targeting budget travellers, Ikamir Guest House costs only 1000VT per person, per night, self catering. You can also camp, at a reduced rate.
The preferred contact for Ikamir is 546 4774 (mobile), say you want to speak to the "man blong guest house" (manager). Another contact is Rail Kaio on 544 8136 (mobile) and he has email.
Accommodation and Food
Ikamir Guest House consists of 2 simple bungalows, each able to sleep 5 people. There is also a very cute kitchen/hang-out room. The toilet and shower are shared.
Generally, visitors cook their own food with the supplied equipment. Bethel village has a store and Lenakel town is not far away. The community can assist, just ask.
Across the creek from Bethel is the up-market Tanna Lodge (formerly Tanna Beach Resort) where nice meals can be bought. Interestingly, Tanna Lodge wanted to buy the Ikamir land but, to the credit of Bethel community, the villagers wanted to keep it and develop it themselves.
Getting there
Bethel Village is about 2 km south of Lenakel, it's an easy walk. If transport is required, truck rides to and from Lenakel cost 500VT, one way. |

Hi, My wife Shona and I Mal stayed here for ten days.
The whole trip was a surprise for my wife's birthday.
Denny who looked after us was a fantastic host. We had a very low key holiday and spent some days just walking the roads, often villagers would offer us rides, so on the days that we hire transport we would pick up the locals. Denny made sure that when the local language was spoken he explained what was being said, so that we didn't feel left out.
The trip to Mt Yasur was of course a highlight, but meeting and dining with the family of our hosts, and hearing the children sing is etched upon our hearts.
Do your homework before you go. Appreciate the Island for what it is, local people living as they always have with a few concessions to modern life. My wife and I have been left with a great respect for the people of Tanna, and a better understanding of there lifestyle.
Thank you Denny, Rail and family for your friendship and hospitality.

I stayed 5 nights in Ikamir in November 2010. Don't hesitate to come here. Rail and Denny deserve to be encouraged for their project that helps the community. Tom, the cousin, is a perfect guide to walk to Yakel, the kastom village (around 6 hrs round trip) to meet the villagers and attend the dances. You will also appreciate their invitation in sharing dinner with the family. Avis aux francophones: la femme de Denny parle un français impeccable! In addition of all the good comments posted here (that I just can confirm)I would like to update this. Beside the 2 bungalows available right now, there is a new, concrete one, under construction, with 2 rooms, that should be finished in the beginning of 2011. Another, native one, "in the tree", is supposed to be completed at the same time. Ikamir is now provided with electricity 24 hours. Michel, from Canada. |

We have just returned from Vanuatu where we had the pleasure of 2 nights at Ikamir. Denny and the family were very accommodating of us and our 4 young children (1500VT adults/750VT kids). The bungalow was very basic but comfortable. We did have a separate flushing toilet and shower but no electricity. It seemed fitting to stay in similar accommodation to the people we had the pleasure of meeting. Beautiful view, beach not good for swimming but great for exploring. The high-light of our holiday was being invited to dinner with the Kaio family. Such warm, generous people. Heaps of fun and very humbling. Denny was keen to point out an on-going desire to be able to invite guests to eat with the family. Amazing cultural experience all-round.
Thanks, the Niven family. |

Awesome place, great bungalow, well equipped kitchen, and a very good toilet/shower block. We visited during the tail-end of the rainy season so didn't get to see the legendary sunsets and the surf was a bit too high to explore the snorkelling possibilites but who cares, what a great spot to hang out. We'll be back. Lovely people - thanks for everything Rail!

I stayed at Ikamir for 3 weeks last year and it was an overall fantastic experience. The bungalows are very comfortable and the view is absolutely breathtaking. You will never see a better sunset! The community was so amazing and so welcoming that I felt like I experienced more about Vanuatu then just its scenery. Ikamir has so much to offer (caves, snorkelling, volcanos, giant banyan trees, etc.) and Glenes, Rail and all of Bethel will take such good care of you! I have never met anyone so kind and generous as them.
I highly suggest you stay at Ikamir! It will be an unforgettable experience.

Great spot right by the sea. Waves at the beach were quite big so not so good for young children's swimming but our 11 year old was fine and there are probably other swimming spots. Walking down the coast was fun and there were some nearby caves to explore. The bungalows were fine and the shared / dinning area kitchen was clean, reasonably equipped and had a great view. Do remember your food as Lenakel has limited options to buy stuff. Tanna Lodge nearby is expensive but does have cold beer. The community took good care of us. |

Would highly recommend this bungalow. Friendly people, clean facilities and well equipped kitchen - just BYO food! The community have pulled this project together well - so let's support it! Great snorkeling around the point - we spotted a turtle!

Hi, I also stayed here for 8 weeks with Melanie and the place is AWESOME!!! Woke up every morning and enjoyed the cool ocean breeze. I love the sunsets, they are SENSATIONAL! It's a nice place for a group of people. The peope from the village are kind and friendly. My favourite food was "kato" bread sticks that the women from the village sell in the market.
