Very nice place, and a good starting point for a nice hike:
I can highly recommend a hike from the Southwestern side of Tanna across the island to the volcano. Starting from Iwaru Beach resort, the hike takes around 5h-7h incl. short breaks (length is 20 km, max. altitude 650m), passing some villages along the way and with good views across the island. The hike is easy in almost all parts and follows a trail in Northeastern direction. Hiking boots are recommended. You will require a guide who knows the area. Do not attempt to walk without a guide – you will certainly get lost! Water can be fetched in some villages along the way, but it is good to carry a 2l bottle or so.
Philip from Iwaru Beach can assist in getting you a guide from one of the villages nearby (2000 Vatu per person for the guide).

Stayed one night and then walked accross the island to Yasur. the place is beautiful - right on the surf beach with a great sunset. The beach is awesome but the surf is quite full on - it would not be good for small children. Elisabert looked after us very well and her husband, John, guided us accross the island. |

We can't recommend this community based guest house more highly - location superb, cool breeze, stunning outlook, quiet, great snorkeling to the right of the point - especially the coral - we saw a turtle!
The community had just finished building a self service new kitchen/dining room area when we arrived- fully kitted out with gas top stove, pots, cups, cooking utensils etc. So you only need to bring kaekae. There are two roomy bungalows - but can accommodate up to 5 people in each. 1,500 vatu per person per night.
The ablutions block has two toilets (flush) and two showers - very new and clean.

We loved staying at this place, the people Elizabeth, Phillip and John are wonderful, so helpful and friendly - we couldn't have asked for more! The tour to the Volcano was spectacular, a once in a lifetime moment!
Accomodation is modest but very cosy and sufficient.
We reccomend this place to anyone who visits Tanna Island! |
