Kamilisa
Memorial Resort on Linua Island is a short walk from the
airstrip. There are no villages on Linua so it's a private
place to relax with some nice white sand beaches. Honeymoon
Beach, five minutes walk across the island is sheltered
and secluded. There are two more good swimming beaches across
the estuary at Lunghariki village. Loh Island has two hills
and at least three limestone caves. There are good views
from the top of the hills.
Costs
and Booking
Kamilisa is owned and run by a couple of retired school
teachers, Whiteley and Elsie Toa. It's open year round and
has four bungalows with a total of six beds but only sees
about twenty tourists a year. Most visit for the beaches
and the seafood. At 2900 Vatu per person per night including
all meals it's a bit pricey but the food is excellent and
the standard of accommodation is good. Accounts are payable
in Vatu cash. Exchange
Rates.
You
might make enquiries by calling the public phone (38565)
in Lunghariki village on Loh Island, if it is working.
Accommodation
and Food
Kamilisa has four bungalows. Two bungalows contain double
beds and the other two have a pair of single beds inside.
The bungalows are built of local materials and have locking
doors. Mosquito nets are provided.
There
is one western style toilet with a water seal (bucket flush)
and one haos
blong swim (bucket showers). A 1000L rainwater tank
supplies drinking water and well water is used for washing.
Toilet paper is provided and a bath towel can be supplied
(it's best to bring your own). Kerosene lamps are used for
lighting. Whiteley has a small generator but may not have
fuel.
Are
there any other island bungalows in Vanuatu where you can
eat fish, coconut crab and lobster for lunch and dinner
every day? These are prepared in a simple local style with
rice and aelan
kaekae (yam,
lap-lap,
pumpkin with coconut cream, nalot
breadfruit, cucumber salad, aelan
kabis and fruits (paw-paw
and watermelon). If there's flour you can have bread for
breakfast with tea or instant coffee and fruit. Otherwise
you'll get aelan
kaekae like fried lap-lap,
yam
chips or fried banana. If you're serious about bread then
it's not difficult to bring a few kilos of flour and some
baker's yeast in case the stores are empty.
Suggestions
The Torres
Islands are the most tropical in Vanuatu (hot and sunny)
so make sure you use high protection, broad spectrum sunscreen
and sunglasses on the beaches. There should be plenty of
aelan kaekae
but the stores may be empty so you if you need any bought
food then it's best to bring it with you.
