Vatthe
Conservation Area, Big Bay, Santo
The
Vatthe Conservation Area protects
2,276 hectares of lowland alluvial rainforest located
at the southern end of Big Bay on the island of Espiritu Santo in
Vanuatu.
Vatthe
is a good habitat for lowland rainforest birds and Vanuatu's largest
river, the Jordan River, runs through it. The tourist literature
often states that something like 80% (around 60) of Vanuatu's
land and freshwater bird species have been recorded at Vatthe.
A more realistic number is 44 species (Royal Forest and Bird
Protection Society of New Zealand website). View
our bird list for Vatthe.
See WTEC's
travel
website site for visiting Vatthe.
The Royal
Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand website
has some excellent pages about Vatthe and Sue Maturin leads a
group tour to Vanuatu once a year, follow this link. |
