| Nomenclature of the Beach Thick-Knee is variable: Birds Australia use Esacus neglectus (Christidis & Boles, 1994), BirdLife (2007) use Esacus giganteus, HANZAB used Esacus magnrostris (Marchant and Higgins, 1993) and Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993) use Burhinus giganteus. The wide range of this bird includes the Andaman Islands (India), peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, northern and eastern Australia, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia (Bregulla, 1992). Exclusively coastal, they are usually seen in pairs, solitary birds and occasionally groups of 3 to 4 (Marchant and Higgins, 1993). In Vanuatu the Beach Thick-Knee is very rare and unevenly distributed (Bregulla, 1992). IUCN Red List Category: NEAR THREATENED by human development and disturbance of coastal habitats in many areas (BirdLife, 2007). References. |
