| This very small sandpiper breeds in the Siberian tundra during the northern summer. Non-breeding birds visit southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia and New Zealand (Marchant and Davies, 1996). Birds arrive in non-breeding grounds from late August to November and depart during March-April (Hayman et al, 1986). Many immatures remain in the non-breeding range all year (Hayman et al, 1986). There is only one sighting of ‘a minute wader’ at Port Vila, supposed to be a Red-necked Stint and assumed to be a regular visitor (Bregulla, 1992). In the absence of further records, this sighting should be considered questionable/unverified. In Fiji, Red-necked Stint is a vagrant and Sanderling Calidris alba is an annual visitor (Environment Consultants, 2001). References. |
