| An alternative genus for this swiftlet is Aerodramus. It has a wide range including Sulawesi and the Moluccas, Melanesia, Samoa, Tonga, Niue and northeast Australia (Higgins, 1999). The subspecies leucopygia is found in New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Santa Cruz group (Bregulla, 1992). In Vanuatu its range has apparently contracted to the northern islands (Bregulla, 1992). This swiftlet can echolocate and usually nests in the darkest parts of caves and sometimes in association with Glossy Swiftlets (Bregulla, 1992). This species may be overlooked because it is difficult for observers to separate it from the Glossy Swiftlet. References. |
