| This large wader breeds in the Arctic regions from Scandinavia to Alaska during the northern summer (Hayman et al, 1986). The eastern race baueri migrates towards Australia and the southwest Pacific in the non-breeding season (Hayman et al, 1986). Birds move south in October-November and the return passage is March-May (Hayman et al, 1986). Many immature birds remain in the non-breeding range all year. This bird is present in small numbers in Vanuatu where suitable feeding habitat occurs, in estuaries with mudflats and/or soft sand. Barring on the tail is most easily seen in flight. References. |
