| This bird of the tropical Pacific breeds in Kiribati, French Polynesia, Sala y Gomez (Chile) and New Caledonia (BirdLife, 2007). In Vanuatu, specimens have been collected on Aneityum and a breeding bird from Tanna in 1935 (Bregulla, 1992). Present breeding locations in Vanuatu are unknown. The villagers on Mere Lava told of a small black seabird that could be this species (S. Totterman, 2005, personal communication). IUCN Red List Category: VULNERABLE on the basis of a small population and breeding range with evidence of a strong decline over the last 50 years (BirdLife, 2007). Predation by cats and rats is the main conservation threat and eradication efforts are proposed for key islets (BirdLife, 2007). Tanna and Mere Lava should be surveyed for breeding birds.
