| This medium-sized curlew breeds all around the Arctic during the northern summer (Hayman et al, 1986). The eastern race variegatus migrates to southeast Asia, Australasia, New Zealand and the southwest Pacific (Hayman et al, 1986). Birds move south in July-September and the return passage is March-May (Hayman et al, 1986). Many immature birds remain in the non-breeding range all year. This bird is present in small numbers in Vanuatu where suitable feeding habitat occurs, in estuaries with mudflats and/or soft sand. The American race hudsonicus, with a dark rump, has been seen in the tropical pacific and New Zealand but there are no records from Vanuatu (Bregulla, 1992). References. |
