| This larger Pluvialis plover is most likely a vagrant to Vanuatu. VanBirds has one record, observed on Efate in 2002 by John Seymour. The Grey Plover breeds in the high arctic and migrates southward during the northern winter, extending to South America, Africa and Australia. It is almost cosmopolitan although rare in New Zealand (Hayman et al, 1986). Non-breeding Grey Plovers should be unmistakeable to experienced bird watchers: in flight they show prominent black patches under the wing, a white rump and a white wing-bar. References. |
