| The status of the White-necked Petrel in Vanuatu is now considered uncertain, without any known records. It breeds on Macauley in the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, and in small numbers on Phillip Island, off Norfolk Island, Australia. It is regarded as VULNERABLE on the 2008 IUCN Red List (BirdLife, 2008) because the population is restricted to two or three very small islands. The closely related Vanuatu Petrel P. occulta (Imber and Tennyson, 2001) has been treated as a smaller form of White-necked Petrel. Confirmed breeding of Vanuatu Petrels in February 2009 on Vanua Lava (Totterman, 2009) supports the specific status of P. occulta. References. |
