| This bird is widespread and common in the tropical and subtropical Pacific and Indian oceans with a very large population (Bregulla, 1992). In Vanuatu, several hundred birds breed on Laika island between Tongoa and Epi. Villagers from Tongoa visit Laika in April each year to collect for food chicks and any adults that may be found in the burrows (Bregulla, 1992). On Mere Lava and at Dip Point on Ambrym, villagers have reported attempts breeding attempts in small numbers (S. Totterman, personal communication). A visit to Aneityum in March 2006 proved a breeding population of about 156 birds on Inyeug, commonly known as Mystery Island (S. Totterman, personal observation). The birds are also said to breed on Goat Island off the coast of Erromango (Bregulla, 1992). References. |
