| Fairy Terns and Little Terns are closely related species and can be confused in the field. Although there are no records of Fairy Terns from Vanuatu, it has been recorded once in Fiji (Environment Consultants, 2001) and the subspecies exsul breeds in New Caledonia. As well, a possible new form from Australia’s Coral Sea Territory, with a mainly dark bill and feet, looks similar to Little Terns in non-breeding plumage (Carter and Mustoe, 2007). Observers should check carefully all ‘little’ terns in Vanuatu. References. |
