VPAI uses the following guiding principles:
- To
only support projects where the control and ownership lies with
local people.
- To
only provide support that has been requested, is genuinely needed
and not available through other channels.
- To
maintain very low administrative overheads and use volunteer
staff wherever possible.
- To
ensure all work is undertaken in a sensitively and cost-effective
manor.
- To
work with government and other non-government organisations.
- To
ensure that support through VPAI builds local capacity to tackle
Vanuatu's environmental challenges.
- To
facilitate the use of traditional skills and local knowledge
as a way of addressing local environmental concerns.
- To
treat environmental matters as part of everyday life and not
in isolation from wider human needs and aspirations.
